CALGARY, AB
Super Visa Insurance in Calgary
Medical insurance for parents and grandparents visiting family in Calgary, set up to meet IRCC’s super visa rules. We compare Canadian insurers and help you get proof of insurance before you apply.
Three things to know first
IRCC wants a private medical policy from an approved insurer, with $100,000 or more of emergency cover, lasting at least a year from arrival.
Insurance comes before the application
Proof of a paid policy goes in with the application. You can pay in full or set up instalments with a deposit. Quotes do not count.
Visa refused?
Refund rules for a refused super visa are set by each insurer. We get them in writing for you before you choose a plan.

Questions Calgary families ask
Will Alberta Health cover my parents during their visit?
No. The Alberta government says a tourist, transient or visitor to Alberta is not eligible for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). Your parents need private coverage for their whole stay.
How long can my parents stay on a super visa?
IRCC’s instructions say border officers should normally allow a stay of up to five years per entry. Their insurance must still be valid for at least one year from each entry, so plan to renew if they stay longer.
If they need care in Calgary
Calgary hospitals are run by Alberta Health Services. Foothills Medical Centre on 29 Street NW has a 24/7 emergency department and provides trauma care. Because visitors are not covered by AHCIP, call the insurer’s 24/7 assistance line as soon as you safely can. They can point your parents to the right care and explain how the bills are handled.
Before you pay: the IRCC rules
Every super visa policy is checked against the same rules, whether your parents fly into Calgary or anywhere else in Canada.
An insurance company must issue it
Brokers and claims administrators cannot issue the policy. It must come from a Canadian insurer, or a foreign insurer on OSFI’s list of federally regulated institutions, and show the insurer’s name.
One year, every entry
The policy must be valid for at least one year from the date of entry. Officers can ask to see it each time your parents arrive.
$100,000 minimum
At least $100,000 of emergency coverage, including health care, hospitalization and repatriation.
Paid, not quoted
Full payment, or instalments with a deposit. A quote alone is not proof of insurance.
Choosing the right plan
Should we pick a higher deductible?
Only if your family could easily pay it. A higher deductible usually means a lower premium, but you pay that amount first on each claim.
Does a health condition rule my parents out?
Not always. Many plans cover a pre-existing condition if it has been stable for a set time before the policy starts. Rules differ by insurer and age, so share the full health history when you ask for a quote.
Can we spread the cost?
Some insurers offer monthly payments. IRCC accepts instalments when a deposit has been paid. We will tell you which insurers offer this.
